The Journey: Phuket → Chiang Mai
The classic Phuket to Chiang Mai route covers approximately 1,400 km and is best enjoyed over 3–5 days with overnight stops. Popular waypoints include:
- Khao Sok National Park — Jungle stop with stunning lake views, perfect first night
- Chumphon or Hua Hin — Coastal break halfway through the south
- Kanchanaburi — Historical bridge, waterfalls, and scenic riverside roads
- Sukhothai — Ancient temples and quiet rural roads
- Lampang → Chiang Mai — Mountain passes, switchbacks, and the final approach through Doi Suthep
Road conditions are excellent on the main highways (Route 4 south, Route 1 north). The final stretch into Chiang Mai offers world-class riding through mountain curves.
Riding in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is the motorcycle capital of Northern Thailand. The city is surrounded by mountains, with access to some of the best riding roads in Southeast Asia:
- Mae Hong Son Loop — 600 km of mountain curves, the #1 motorcycle route in Thailand
- Doi Inthanon — Thailand's highest peak, stunning switchbacks
- Chiang Rai & Golden Triangle — Remote northern border riding
- Pai — 762 curves of pure riding joy through the mountains
Many riders use Chiang Mai as a base for weeks of exploration. The city has a great food scene, affordable accommodation, and a large motorcycle community.
